In the aircraft part repair world, your MRO should be your ally.
As your ally, they should be there to make the process as easy as possible for you. To really be effective, they should give you options to save you money, work around issues when they arise and lower your turn-around times.
What are some of the ways your repair partner can save you money?
If your MRO is charging you list price for all your piece parts, they may not have your best interest in mind.
A great repair partner will work to find options that save you money, maybe by sourcing piece parts from other units or cannibalizing units already on their shelves.
A true repair partner may have other options, too. Perhaps they see a different method for cutting costs, and they have the flexibility to pursue that method… even if it’s not part of their standard operating procedures. If it’s an option, they should explore it.
There are usually many money-saving options available, and a good partner will consider all the options with your best interest in mind.
Options don’t reduce quality.
A great partner will explore the options without sacrificing the quality of your repair work.
If your repair partner uses piece parts from a unit already on their shelves, the piece parts should be in good, serviceable quality. Even if you ask your repair station to keep costs down--which you shouldn’t be afraid to do--they should never sacrifice quality just to save a few dollars.
Repair stations will welcome your suggestions, too. In some cases, you may see an option that isn’t apparent to them. Don’t be afraid to make suggestions; if the repair station thinks your suggestion comes at the expense of quality, they’ll tell you. A good repair partner should be open to your input and pursue your suggestion as an option.
A good repair partner will also discuss the options with you before taking action. They should proactively communicate when a new option becomes available, keeping you updated every step of the way.

Contingency options are important.
Issues are going to come up. A great repair partner will let you know as soon as they arise, and they’ll come prepared with options for getting around the problem.
If your unit goes BER, some repair stations will just charge an annoying evaluation fee. Some won’t even tell you until afterward!
A great repair partner has contingency options. Before they call you, they should already know if they have an option to replace it, or if maybe there is another solution that will keep your costs and TAT down.
When you get that call from your repair station, they should be prepared with all of the details and all of the options. They’ll explain the issue, what options are available, and their suggestion for completing the repair in the fastest and most economical way possible.
A great partner will call you first, give you the options, and work with you to pick the one that best meets your needs.
Any repair station can replace an aircraft part, but most won’t go above and beyond to give you the options you really need to save time, frustration and money.
