5 Types Of Aircraft Grease That Covers 90% Of All Your Grease Needs
Have you ever been AOG for grease?
You may be sitting across from this screen laughing, but I’ve seen it. Seriously!
One of our team members get’s a frantic call. The client panicking.
We’re “AOG” for grease -he clamored.
You could tell by his voice someone made a big mistake. He was having to pay for it.
They ran out of aircraft grease and didn’t replenish. Whoops!
There’s a lot of different greases you can choose from depending on your task card or project. But there’s no need to go drifting through different model numbers and specifications.
Aeroshell 6 (MIL‐PRF‐24139)
AeroShell Grease 6 is a general purpose grease composed of a mineral oil thickened with Microgel®, possessing good all-round properties within a limited range. It is used in anti-friction bearings, gearboxes and plain bearings. It is inhibited against oxidation and corrosion and has good water resistance and low noise capability. The useful operating temperature range is –40°C to +121°C.
You’ll spend about $10.00 for a 14oz tube
Aeroshell 22 (MIL‐PRF‐81322F)
This is a fantastic, general purpose grease used in aircraft. It’s recommended to use wherever severe operating conditions are encountered. Conditions such as high bearing loads, high speeds, wide operating temperature range, and where long grease retention and high resistance to water washout are required.
You’ll spend about $13.00 for a 14oz tube.
Dow Corning, DC 44 Grease (MIL‐L‐15719)
DC 44 is a medium-high temperature bearing grease and is a thickened silicone oil that’s used for lubricating plastics, rubber, and anti-friction bearings.
It’s recommended for aircraft engines, conveyor systems, dryers, oven fans, and textile slashers. It provides good shear stability, wide service temperature range, inertness, and resistance to corrosion, moisture, and oxidation.
You’ll spend about $25 for a 5.3oz tube.
Mobile 33 (BMS 3-33 / MIL-PRF-23827)
Mobil Grease 33 is a high-performance lithium-complex grease designed for general-purpose aircraft use.
It’s intended for use in highly loaded anti-friction bearings, gears, and actuators as well as instruments, high-speed bearings (though not recommended for wheel bearings), and general airframe lubrication, over operating temperatures from –100ºF to 250ºF (–73ºC to 121ºC).
You’ll spend about $16 for a 13.7oz tube.
Mobile SHC100
Mobil Aviation Grease SHC 100 is a supreme performance synthetic grease. It has a high dropping point, excellent resistance to water wash, and a tenacious structural stability.
It’s recommended for high speed, heavy load applications such as wheel bearings, as well as for slower speed, high load applications such as landing gear bearings, slides, and joints. It provides outstanding protection at operating temperatures from –54 ºC (-65 ºF) to 177 ºC (350 ºF).
You’ll spend about $18 for a 13.4oz tube.
